Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Thursday, according to an announcement by Iran’s Consulate General in Mazar-e-Sharif, as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent renewed conflict between Iran and the United States.

Munir’s visit comes amid heightened negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme and growing optimism from Washington about a possible agreement. US President Donald Trump recently said there was a “very good chance" of reaching a deal with Iran and revealed he had postponed a planned military strike to allow talks to continue.

The Pakistan defence chief is expected to hold discussions with senior Iranian officials at a time when Islamabad is increasingly being viewed as an important regional intermediary with ties to both Tehran and Gulf nations.

However, despite renewed diplomatic activity, Iranian officials signalled that major disagreements remain unresolved.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran continued to hold the same position outlined in a previously proposed 14-point plan presented to the United States.

“The reason we don’t talk about the details of nuclear-related discussions is clear. We have done this twice, and the other party’s greed led us into war. We cannot ignore this experience," Baghaei said, according to Al Jazeera.

He also reiterated Iran’s position on nuclear development.

“Regarding nuclear issues, the matter is very clear — we are a member of the NPT [Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty] and we have the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes," he added.

Iran has repeatedly maintained that its nuclear programme is intended for civilian and energy purposes, while the US and several Western allies have sought guarantees that Tehran will not pursue nuclear weapons capability.

Munir’s Tehran visit comes amid broader efforts to avoid escalation in West Asia, where tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States have raised concerns over regional stability and global energy supplies.

The situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern, with any disruption to the strategic waterway carrying potential consequences for international oil markets.

Pakistan shares a long border with Iran and has sought to balance relations with Tehran, Saudi Arabia and the United States, giving Islamabad a potentially influential role in ongoing regional diplomacy.

While negotiations continue, comments from Iranian officials suggest mistrust toward Washington remains one of the biggest obstacles to a breakthrough.
