Pakistan is working to broaden the scope of ongoing ceasefire discussions between the United States and Iran to include Lebanon and Yemen, according to Reuters.
A Pakistani source familiar with the talks said Islamabad is seeking a ceasefire arrangement not only for Iran but also for Lebanon and Yemen.
“It will be discussed during the upcoming talks and we will settle it," the source said. An Iranian and US delegation is expected to travel to Pakistan for talks, with Islamabad facilitating contacts between Tehran and Washington.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke with Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who sought Islamabad’s support to end Israeli attacks on Lebanon.
Sharif said Pakistan was engaged in “sincere efforts for regional peace" and that the talks with the United States and Iran were part of that effort, according to an official statement.
Both Washington and Tehran have confirmed their participation in Pakistan-brokered talks, although the schedule has not yet been finalised. The White House has said Vice President JD Vance is expected to lead the US delegation in Islamabad over the weekend.
Pakistan has welcomed signs of restraint in the conflict but has strongly criticised continued Israeli strikes on Lebanon. Sharif and Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, expressed satisfaction over the de-escalation achieved so far, while calling for further steps towards peace.
The diplomatic push follows a two-week truce agreed by US President Donald Trump and Iran after weeks of fighting. However, tensions remain high, with Iran warning that Israeli actions in Lebanon could undermine the ceasefire.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Saeed Khatibzadeh, said “Iran was on the verge of responding to the ceasefire violation last night".
Such a move was avoided because “Pakistan intervened", Khatibzadeh told ITV News, according to excerpts from Iran’s Tasnim news agency.
