The Wadgaon court in Pune has remanded the prime accused, Siya Goyal, and her alleged partner, Chetan Chaudhary, to 14 days of judicial custody until July 16, in connection with the murder of her fiancé, Ketan Agarwal.

As their 11-day police remand has concluded, investigators are transitioning from active interrogation to processing evidence.

WHAT NEXT?

The next critical legal and investigative steps in the case encompass several key developments:

DECIPHERING CODED CONVERSATIONS

The prosecution is working to decode recovered digital data from Siya’s mobile devices. Pune Rural Police recently retrieved a Snapchat conversation in which Siya reportedly asked a friend for Aadhaar card details to book tickets, adding that it was for a wedding “that would never happen". Investigators are attempting to decipher other heavily coded text messages to determine whether a third suspect was part of the alleged conspiracy.

INVESTIGATIVE SHIFT TO CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE

As there are no direct eyewitnesses to the alleged push at Lohagad Fort, the police are looking to build a watertight case based entirely on circumstantial evidence. Legally, this requires the prosecution to satisfy the Supreme Court’s landmark “Panchsheel" test by establishing an unbroken chain of evidence pointing exclusively to the guilt of the accused.

Key components of this chain include:

  • Crime scene panchnamas and a recorded reconstruction of how the duo allegedly rehearsed pushing Ketan at a location near Lullanagar.
  • Forensic examination of recovered personal items, including the clothes allegedly worn during the incident and Ketan’s burnt passport.

What is Panchsheel test?

The “Panchsheel" test is a foundational legal standard established by the Supreme Court of India that dictates how a person can be convicted using only circumstantial evidence.Formulated in the landmark 1984 judgment Sharad Birdhichand Sarda v. State of Maharashtra, the apex court laid down five golden principles (hence the name Panchsheel).

The five components of the Panchsheel test require that:

1. Fully Established Facts

2. Consistency With Guilt

3. Conclusive Nature

4. Exclusion of Other Hypotheses

5. An Unbroken Chain

REJECTION OF POLYGRAPH AND NARCO TESTS

While the police initially sought to conduct polygraph and narco-analysis tests on both accused to resolve their conflicting statements, both Siya and Chetan formally declined to undergo the tests during their court appearance. Under Indian law, these tests cannot be administered without the explicit consent of the accused, forcing investigators to withdraw their request.

COURT PROCEEDINGS AND BAIL BATTLE

As the accused remain in judicial custody rather than active police custody, their legal teams have initiated bail proceedings, arguing that the police have already seized the primary digital devices and that further incarceration is unwarranted.

Meanwhile, a parallel legal dispute has emerged over who is authorized to represent Siya, bringing high-profile defence attorneys and a ₹10 crore defamation notice into the spotlight.
