One of India’s top medal contenders at the World Wrestling Championships and 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medallist, Aman Sehrawat was disqualified from the tournament on Sunday after he failed to make weight.

Aman, who won the bronze medal in the 57kg category at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was supposed to fight Vladimir Erogov of North Macedonia in the first round but had to forfeit after he was found overweight.

The Indian Express has learnt that Aman fell sick in the camp and was having fever. “He couldn’t cut weight as he was not well. He had fever night before and that is why he didn’t go for the weigh in,” his coach Lalit Prasad told The Indian Express.

The whole Indian contingent had reached Zagreb, Croatia on 25th August to acclimatise for the tournament and were part of the camp. He had enough time on hand to train but unfortunately fell sick leading to the forfeiture of the bout.

With Aman out of the contention, Indian hopes rely on former World Championships medallist Antim Panghal in the women’s 53 kg, Tokyo Olympian Deepak Punia in the men’s 92 kg and Sujeet Kalkal in the men’s 65 kg to deliver the goods in the tournament.

Poor show on the first day

Indian campaign at the World Championships has already started on a poor note with four Indian wrestlers – Udit (61 Kg), Rohit (70 Kg), Mukul Dahiya (86 Kg), and Rajat Ruhal (125 Kg)- losing in the first round.

Among the four, Mukul made it to repechage in the 86 kg and will fight today as his opponent Zahid Valencia reached the final of the 86 kg. He will fight Algerian wrestler Fateh Benferdjallah today.
