Pennsylvania father charged after stabbing infant son, throwing him in snow

A 44-year-old Pennsylvania man has been charged with attempted homicide and multiple assault-related offences after allegedly stabbing his three-month-old son and throwing the infant into the snow outside their apartment complex in Coatesville, authorities said.Police were called to the Millview Apartments on Smithbridge Drive in Coatesville around 11:30 am on February 12 following reports of a stabbing.According to investigators, Michael Phillips was in a bedroom with his wife and their infant son when he began making disturbing remarks about having to “sacrifice the baby.”Moments later, Phillips allegedly approached the child and stabbed him in the abdomen. The baby’s mother fled the apartment with the infant and her nine-year-old son.

Investigators said Phillips followed them outside, grabbed the baby from her arms and threw him into the snow. The mother then shielded the infant with her body as her older son ran to a neighbour’s home for help.Speaking to NBC 10 Philadelphia, neighbour Jim Gemmell said the boy came to his doorstep crying, “He’s going to kill my baby. He’s going to kill my baby.” Gemmell told NBCPhiladelphia that officers had to subdue Phillips, who was resisting arrest.

Responding officers recovered a kitchen knife with blood on the blade from inside the apartment. The infant, who suffered a deep stab wound to the abdomen, was first taken to Paoli Hospital for emergency surgery and later flown to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He is currently listed in critical but stable condition.According to the criminal complaint, Phillips allegedly told officers, “This was all part of God’s plan” and “I did it God, I did it.”Phillips faces charges including attempted homicide, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He is being held without bail at Chester County Prison.
