Pathanamthitta police find teen’s sexual assault allegations false

Kochi: An investigation by Pathanamthitta police into the complaint of a 13-year-old girl that she was sexually abused by her classmates has prima facie found that the allegations were false.

Sources said that the investigation, including medical examinations, did not reveal evidence indicating sexual assault as alleged by the girl. The minor has also reportedly retracted her allegations following the medical report. Police questioned six individuals, including four minors, following the allegations but did not record arrests as they found inconsistencies in the girl’s statement. Police sources said that they are investigating the reason for the girl’s actions.

It is suspected that a fallout between the accused persons and the girl prompted her to raise such an allegation. The girl initially raised the allegation during school counselling. She then alleged that nearly 10 persons sexually abused her. Sources said that initial investigations began a week ago. The allegation was that she was abused near the school premises and at the house of another minor girl. Police registered two FIRs on Friday and called in six persons for questioning as part of the initial probe.

However, police found that the teens, who were facing the allegation, were not present at the alleged place of occurrence at the time frame. Officers said the suspects were questioned based on the girl’s statement. The teen’s statement was recorded again and found to have inconsistencies with the version she initially gave to childcare authorities as well. Considering other glaring inconsistencies in her statements as well, those who were detained for questioning were released.

They were served notices directing them to appear before the investigating officer whenever required. The state Commission for Protection of Child Rights too had sought a report from Pathanamthitta police chief and the child welfare committee regarding the incident. A deputy superintendent of police-headed team is conducting a detailed investigation into the case. Police have also decided to carry out a thorough examination of the digital evidence collected during the investigation before deciding on further action.
