On the eve of the results of West Bengal Assembly elections, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya said the people of Bengal wanted freedom from Trinamool Congress’s “maha jungle raj" and urged people to refrain from violence on the results day.

“Tomorrow’s vote counting will take place without any hindrance. Forces will be deployed everywhere, our counting agents will stay throughout. There will be no repeat of 2021. The votes that people have cast will not be looted. Those who went to the Supreme Court against this, the Supreme Court has also given them a response," he said during a press conference on Sunday, taking a jibe at the TMC.

Bhattacharya also appeared confident of a BJP victory in Bengal, saying that TMC will no longer be in a position to influence elections through intimidation. “The TMC government is gone. Many people in West Bengal have never voted. They were not allowed to vote. In such an atmosphere, now that people have become fearless, they have voted," he told news agency ANI.

“The people have rejected and rooted out the TMC government. Within 6 months, we will publish a white paper on the amount of money the TMC spent on expensive lawyers from the High Court to the Supreme Court," he added.

‘Election Of Rejection’

Speaking to India Today, Bhattacharya framed the electoral contest as an “election of rejection" for the TMC. “From teacher recruitment scams to unemployment, all factors are contributing to the TMC’s decline," he added.

He also invoked Bengali identity and cultural pride in this election, saying the people wanted a change out of a “Bengalis first" sentiment. The West Bengal BJP chief also promised to make Bengal an investment destination when it comes to power.

“Our main aim is to stop the exodus of labour, students, capital and investors," he added.

The counting of votes for West Bengal’s 293 constituencies will take place on Monday. The TMC is working to defend its stronghold in West Bengal against a determined BJP challenge.

Exit polls in the state have shown mixed trends. While several pollsters have indicated a BJP edge, others have projected a strong TMC performance, making the final outcome uncertain. A victory for Mamata Banerjee would strengthen her position, while a defeat could raise questions about her leadership standing.
