A viral social media post claiming that petrol pumps will remain closed every Sunday following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to conserve fuel has been debunked by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), which has confirmed that the claim is false.

The misinformation suggested that fuel stations in certain states would shut operations on Sundays as part of fuel-saving measures. However, PIB’s Fact Check unit clarified on X that no such decision has been taken by the government and urged citizens not to circulate unverified messages.

The fact check unit said that the claims are “fake", adding that official sources should be relied upon for accurate information. The clarification comes after the post triggered confusion and concern among users.

The clarification also comes amid speculations that the Centre might hike fuel prices due to the economic fallout driven by the war in West Asia.
