CPI State secretary Gujjula Eswaraiah on Friday accused several political leaders of taking around ₹1,000 crore every year from fake medicine mafia in Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking at a press conference in Nellore, he alleged that a corrupt political leadership in the State was taking around 1,000 crore in bribes every year from pharma mafia and promoting fake medicines.

“It is not clear how many qualified people, with degrees such as B. Pharmacy and D. Pharmacy, are there in the 60,000 drug stores operating in A.P. While only 30,000 stores are run with the qualified people, another 30,000 stores are being run with just certificates,” he alleged.

“It is clear that political corruption is behind this. Even after studying B. Pharmacy and D. Pharmacy, many young people are still unemployed,” he said.

Mr. Eswaraiah demanded that the government take action against those who are running medical shops without genuine qualifications. Similarly, he raised the issue of the drugs that was banned 10 years ago still being sold illegally in some shops by changing their names.

“There is a serious threat to the health of the people as corporate healthcare services are not accessible to the common man. If the medical equipment worth ₹5 lakh is provided to each government hospital, it could curb the rampant medical mafia of the corporate powers,” he said.
