Around 5.18 crore names have been removed from the electoral rolls across 12 states and Union Territories as the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) ends.

The data from the Election Commission of India (ECI) suggests that, in addition to other deletions, around 60 lakh names of dead voters have been removed, news agency PTI reported.

After the completion of the second phase of the exercise, the voter list now stands at 45.81 crore names, which accounts to 10.2 per cent reduction.

According to data from the Election Commission of India, a total of 66,88,636 deceased electors were removed from the electoral rolls, with Uttar Pradesh accounting for the highest share at around 25.47 lakh.

Around 24.16 lakh named of deceased voters were deleted from the voter list of poll-bound West Bengal.

The second phase of the SIR was conducted in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Puducherry, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa.

Why Names Were Deleted

According to the Election Commission, deletions targeted voters who were: 1. Absent at registered addresses 2. Permanently shifted 3. Dead, duplicate, or other categories.

The ECI says the deletion of names is aimed at removing “ghost voters", improving the accuracy of the roll.

The Third Phase Of SIR

The third phase of the SIR will be carried out across 17 states and five Union Territories — Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Ladakh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana and Uttarakhand.

The third round of the electoral revision — which will cover around 40 crore voters — is expected to begin after assembly polls in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry, PTI reported.

West Bengal is set to undergo polling in two phases on April 23 and 29, respectively. Tamil Nadu will vote in a single phase on April 23.

Voting in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry was held on April 9. The results of all five assembly elections will be announced on May 4.
