Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday updated his social media profile ahead of the counting of votes for the recently held Assembly elections in the state, removing the “Chief Minister" tag from his bio.

The updated profile now describes him as “Polit Bureau Member, Communist Party of India (Marxist)". The change comes just a day before the declaration of results in what has been a closely watched electoral contest in Kerala.

Vijayan is seeking a historic third consecutive term from his stronghold constituency of Dharmadam, which has remained a key base for the Left Democratic Front (LDF). The region has historically been a stronghold for the ruling alliance, but the current election is being seen as a more competitive battle than in previous years.

The contest in Kerala has seen the ruling LDF face a strong challenge from the United Democratic Front (UDF), led by the Congress, as well as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The UDF had fielded VP Abdul Rasheed against the Chief Minister, while the NDA nominated K Ranjith.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, Vijayan won the Dharmadam seat comfortably, securing 95,522 votes with a vote share of 59.8 per cent. His nearest rival from the UDF secured 28.4 per cent of the votes. In 2016, he won the seat for the first time with a margin of 30,905 votes.

Exit polls released ahead of counting have largely predicted an edge for the Congress-led UDF, though projections vary across agencies. Some surveys suggest a tight race, while others indicate a possible advantage for the opposition alliance.

Kerala went to polls in a single phase on April 9, recording a voter turnout of 78.27 per cent. The results, along with those of several other states, are scheduled to be announced on May 4.
