In the wake of the recent tragedy at the popular tourist destination of Muthathi in Malavalli taluk, where five persons, including four women from the same family and their car driver, drowned after being swept away by the strong currents of the Cauvery river, Water Resources Minister Ramalinga Reddy visited the spot on Monday and reviewed the situation.
After inspecting the site, the Minister held a meeting with senior officials to discuss measures to enhance tourist safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Reddy said comprehensive measures would be implemented to curb the recurring drowning incidents at Muthathi. “Every year, five to six people lose their lives here. We have decided to develop a safe bathing channel on the lines of Rishikesh and Haridwar, where devotees and tourists can bathe safely in the Cauvery,” he said.
The Minister said officials had been directed to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) at the earliest for the proposed project. He also instructed the authorities to construct public toilets at the tourist destination.
As part of the safety measures, around 20 CCTV cameras will be installed along the riverbank and other vulnerable locations, while eight marshals will be deployed to regulate tourist movement and monitor safety. A police outpost will also be established, and warning and information signboards at the site will be upgraded, he added.
MLA for Malavalli Narendra Swamy, Mandya Deputy Commissioner Kumar, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K.R. Nandini, Superintendent of Police V.J. Shobharani, and other senior officials were present during the inspection.
