Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday to push for greater public connect, environmental consciousness and personal responsibility among ministers, sources said.
According to sources, the Prime Minister advised ministers to opt for carpooling whenever possible while travelling to common destinations.
“How many of you are presently carpooling?" PM Modi is learnt to have asked his Cabinet colleagues during the meeting.
Sources said the Prime Minister told ministers that carpooling would be a welcome practice instead of multiple individual vehicles being used for the same destination.
The suggestion is being seen as part of the government’s broader push towards sustainability and responsible public conduct.
This is not the first time PM Modi has raised the issue of reducing vehicle usage among ministers.
During an earlier Cabinet meeting held amid the West Asia crisis, the Prime Minister had urged ministers to lead by example and consider reducing the number of vehicles in their cavalcades.
However, he had made it clear that there should be no compromise on anyone’s security arrangements.
Sources added that during the same discussion, the Prime Minister also advised ministers against unnecessary spending on new vehicles, while encouraging the adoption of environmentally friendly options such as electric vehicles.
The Prime Minister also shared tips with ministers on dealing with the ongoing heatwave conditions, following a series of awareness posts he had made on social media platform X.
He urged ministers to stay hydrated and encourage people in their respective constituencies to drink plenty of water amid the severe heat conditions affecting several parts of the country.
PM Modi further stressed the importance of strengthening engagement with people at the grassroots level.
According to sources, he told ministers that feedback from ordinary citizens is extremely important for both the government and individual ministries in improving governance and policymaking.
