PM Modi Foreign Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a six-day visit to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from July 6 to 11 to strengthen India’s strategic and economic engagement across the Indo-Pacific, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday.

The three-nation tour will begin in Indonesia, followed by Australia, where PM Modi’s main engagements will be held in Melbourne, before concluding in New Zealand.

In Indonesia, PM Modi will hold talks with President Prabowo Subianto to review bilateral ties and explore cooperation in areas including trade, maritime security, digital public infrastructure and critical minerals. Indonesia is India’s largest trading partner in ASEAN and a key supplier of coal, palm oil and nickel.

Addressing a media briefing, MEA Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon said that Indonesia has always played an important role in the security and stability of the Malacca Strait maritime zone.

“This is a very important maritime zone for India, as it represents one of the country’s most important sea lanes of communication. It is significant not only for India as an Indian Ocean nation, but probably for the global economy as well…" he said as quoted by news agency IANS.

During his visit to Australia, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on expanding cooperation in defence, clean energy, critical minerals, investment and emerging technologies. The two countries are strategic partners in the Quad alongside the United States and Japan.

The Prime Minister is also expected to address the Indian diaspora at a community event titled “Melbourne Meets Modi" at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on July 9.

The final leg of the visit will take the Prime Minister to New Zealand. The MEA Secretary (East) said that PM Modi’s visit to New Zealand would be special as it would be the first by an Indian prime minister in nearly 40 years.

Earlier today, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon confirmed PM Modi’s visit, describing it as “historic".

“I’m delighted to announce Indian Prime Minister @narendramodi will make his first official visit to New Zealand next week," Luxon posted on social media without disclosing the actual date of the visit.

Calling India one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies, Luxon said India is of enormous importance to New Zealand’s economic prosperity.

“We are taking the two countries’ relationship to the next level with our New Zealand-India Free Trade Agreement, signed in April, which will deliver more jobs, higher exports and stronger economic growth for New Zealand," he said.

Luxon said the deal will unlock new opportunities, opening a market of 1.4 billion people for goods and services from New Zealand, “bringing more money into Kiwi communities, creating jobs and lifting wages".

India and New Zealand signed a free trade agreement (FTA) earlier this year to boost two-way commerce in goods and services and promote investments.
