A protest against a local landfill site turned violent on Sunday afternoon in Ghaziabad’s Meerpur Hindu village, Loni, as farmers and police personnel clashed. The altercation resulted in alleged stone-pelting and police lathi-charge, injuring both farmers and officers. A video going viral on social media shows police lathi-charging farmers.

The unrest began when local residents reportedly forced open the main gates of the dumping ground to stage a sit-in. The situation escalated, leading to injuries on both sides and a heated exchange on social media.

The protesters alleged that police launched a brutal lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. However, police claimed that the farmers were pelting stones that led to the lathi-charge.

As per a report by PTI, a farmer named Manoj Kumar claimed that around 50 to 60 protestors sustained injuries to their hands and heads.

Viral videos on social media appear to show demonstrators with various injuries, allegedly due to police action.

Loni Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Siddhartha Gautam denied the allegations of a lathi-charge. In a statement, the ACP asserted that the police did not use force. “Protesters resorted to stone-pelting, which left two police officers injured. The injured officers were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment," he was quoted as saying by PTI.

However, images or names of the injured cops were not disclosed.

ACP Gautam added that the “law and order situation is currently under control."
