Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday accused the United States of spreading “fake news" about activity in the Strait of Hormuz, alleging that Washington was attempting to manipulate global financial markets. US-Israel-Iran War LIVE
Araghchi’s remarks on X followed reports that US officials walked back a claim that an American warship had escorted an energy tanker through the strategically vital strait earlier in the day.
“US officials are posting fake news to manipulate markets. It won’t protect them from the inflationary tsunami they’ve imposed on Americans," the Iranian foreign minister wrote.
“Markets are facing the biggest shortfall in HISTORY: bigger than Arab Oil Embargo, Iran’s Islamic Revolution and the Kuwait invasion COMBINED," he added, warning of severe economic consequences.
Separately, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a direct military warning. The naval commander of the IRGC, Alireza Tangsiri, said any US military vessels or allied ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz would be targeted.
“The claim of an oil tanker passing through the Strait of Hormuz with a US military escort is utterly false. Any passage of the US fleet and its allies will be halted by Iranian missiles and suicide drones," Tangsiri said.
The exchange marks a sharp escalation in rhetoric around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor, as tensions continue to rise between Tehran and Washington.
