Power Ministry Rolls Out WFH, Public Transport Push After PM Modi’s Appeal

In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent push for cost-cutting and optimum use of resources, the Power Ministry is set to roll out a series of measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and encouraging sustainable commuting practices among its employees.

Sources said that beginning Monday, nearly 20 per cent of the ministry’s staff will work from home on a rotational basis as part of an effort to reduce daily commuting and cut down on unnecessary vehicle usage.

Officials have also been encouraged to increasingly use public transport, including the Delhi Metro and bus services, wherever possible. In addition, the ministry is exploring a carpooling arrangement in coordination with DTC buses for employees of both the Power Ministry and the Urban Development Ministry.

In another significant initiative, the ministry is preparing to launch a voluntary portal where employees can submit details of all cars owned by their families. As part of the exercise, employees will be required to share odometer readings, which will be reviewed after a month.

The ministry is planning to introduce small incentives and rewards for employees and families that demonstrate minimal use of their vehicles during the review period, in a bid to promote fuel conservation and responsible resource utilisation.

The move comes amid the Centre’s broader emphasis on energy conservation, sustainable practices, and leading by example in public life.
