Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor is likely to make his electoral debut in the upcoming Bankipur Assembly by-election in Patna, a contest that is fast emerging as one of Bihar’s most closely watched political battles.
According to sources in Jan Suraaj, the party founder is being considered as its candidate for the seat.
A key meeting of the party is scheduled for July 4, during which a final decision on Kishor’s candidature is expected. If approved, the announcement could be made a day later, NDTV reported.
‘May Be A Mistake Not to Contest’
Until recently, Kishor had maintained that he would not contest elections himself and would instead focus on expanding Jan Suraaj’s organisational strength. He later acknowledged that the decision may have been a “mistake". The party not only failed to open its account in the state but also secured only around 4 per cent of the vote, far below the anticipated 12 to 15 per cent.
The by-election has been necessitated after BJP leader Nitin Nabin, who represented Bankipur as an MLA, was elected to the Rajya Sabha. The constituency has remained a BJP bastion for decades, and Kishor’s entry into the fray would turn the contest into a direct showdown between the BJP and Jan Suraaj.
For the BJP, retaining the seat carries considerable political significance. Since it was represented by one of the party’s senior leaders, a defeat would hand the opposition an opportunity to project it as a major setback. A victory, on the other hand, would reinforce the BJP’s claim of enjoying continued public support in the constituency.
Kishor’s Biggest Test
The stakes are no less significant for Prashant Kishor. After spending years advocating political change in Bihar, undertaking a statewide foot march, launching the Jan Suraaj campaign and eventually floating his own party, he now faces the challenge of testing his appeal directly before voters.
Jan Suraaj maintains that the electorate in Bankipur is looking for change. The party argues that despite the BJP’s dominance in the constituency for nearly 40 years, people are now seeking a new kind of politics and fresh leadership. According to party leaders, the possibility of fielding Kishor has emerged only after consultations with local workers and residents.
If Prashant Kishor joins the contest, the election will not be a battle for a single seat.
A strong performance, or an outright victory, in one of the BJP’s strongest bastions would significantly strengthen Kishor’s standing in Bihar politics. A defeat, however, would provide his opponents with ammunition to question his political influence.
With the next Assembly elections on the horizon, the by-election is also expected to serve as a test of Jan Suraaj’s public support and whether Prashant Kishor has succeeded in establishing himself as a major political leader.
The outcome could also influence the calculations of other political parties in Bihar. Kishor’s entry into the contest has the potential to alter the opposition’s vote arithmetic, prompting the Grand Alliance to reassess its strategy. Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Congress and other opposition parties are closely monitoring the developments.
