Uttarakhand Rain Alert: Persistent rainfall in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district has led to a steady rise in the water levels of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers

Uttarakhand Rain Alert: Heavy rainfall continued across parts of Uttarakhand on Friday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for Nainital and Bageshwar districts. The weather department has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, while several other districts remain under a yellow alert.

The warning comes as the southwest monsoon gains momentum across the hill state. After entering Uttarakhand on June 30, the monsoon became active across all districts by Wednesday.

Rainfall Recorded Across Several Uttarakhand Districts

Light to moderate showers were reported in different parts of the state on Thursday. Khanpur received the highest rainfall at 41.5 mm, followed by Laksar (33 mm), Roorkee (21 mm), Thalisain (19 mm), Ranikhet (18 mm), Champawat (15 mm) and Mussoorie (12.3 mm).

According to the Dehradun Meteorological Centre, daytime temperatures remained close to normal in the plains but stayed below the seasonal average in the hill districts. Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 30.4°C, while Mukteshwar and New Tehri registered 24.5°C and 20.1°C, respectively.

Landslides Disrupt Kedarnath Route And Badrinath National Highway

The spell of rain also disrupted traffic on two major pilgrimage routes in Uttarakhand.

Movement on the Kedarnath route was temporarily suspended in Rudraprayag district after rocks and debris fell from a hillside in the Munkatia area. Authorities halted both vehicular and pedestrian movement as a precautionary measure.

Rudraprayag District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar said the route was reopened after a JCB machine cleared the debris and large boulders, allowing pilgrims and vehicles to continue their journey.

In Chamoli district, a landslide near Gulabkoti village blocked the Badrinath National Highway between Chamoli and Joshimath. The blockage led to long queues of vehicles carrying pilgrims travelling to and from Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib, along with local commuters.

Officials later restored traffic after teams from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) removed the debris using heavy machinery.

Yellow Alert Issued For Six Uttarakhand Districts

Besides the orange alert for Nainital and Bageshwar, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for parts of Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Chamoli, where heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places.

In view of the forecast, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) has directed all concerned district magistrates to remain on alert and ensure necessary precautionary measures are in place to tackle any weather-related emergencies.

Rising Alaknanda, Mandakini River Levels Put Rudraprayag On Alert

Persistent rainfall in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district has led to a steady rise in the water levels of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, prompting the district administration to step up monitoring efforts.

Officials said continuous rainfall since Wednesday morning has caused the Alaknanda River to rise from 622 metres above sea level on Tuesday to 622.5 metres on Wednesday. Authorities warned that if the rain continues over the next few days, the water levels in both rivers could increase further and move closer to the danger mark.

The administration is keeping a close watch on the situation and has intensified surveillance in vulnerable areas as a precaution against any possible flooding.

Amarnath Yatra 2026 Begins From Baltal And Pahalgam

Meanwhile, the 57-day Amarnath Yatra formally began on Friday, with the first batches of Amarnath Yatris setting out from the twin base camps of Baltal and Pahalgam towards the Shri Amarnath Ji Cave Shrine in the south Kashmir Himalayas
