Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League table with a narrow 1-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor, a result that also confirmed the hosts’ relegation on Wednesday.

A fifth-minute strike from Erling Haaland proved decisive as City climbed above Arsenal on goals scored, with both sides level on points and goal difference. Despite the crucial win, manager Pep Guardiola expressed frustration at his side’s inability to turn dominance into a more comfortable margin.

“The chances were there. We created a lot. We made a fantastic game," said Guardiola. “We did everything after a demanding game three days ago."

Manchester City started brightly, with Rayan Cherki forcing a fine save from Martin Dubravka before Haaland calmly chipped the goalkeeper to open the scoring. The visitors continued to press, but wastefulness in front of goal kept Burnley in contention. Haaland later struck the post, while Burnley threatened sporadically, with Zian Flemming missing a key opportunity.

At the opposite end of the table, Burnley’s relegation was sealed after a difficult campaign that yielded just 20 points from 34 matches, leaving them well short of safety.

“We’ve fallen a bit short. The facts are we had to overachieve this year and we’ve not mananged to do that," said Parker.

“In certain moments we’ve lacked a certain quality about us and not managed to get enough points."

This is the fifth consecutive season in which Burnley have either been relegated or promoted, as they continue to oscillate between the riches of the Premier League and the Championship, while Parker faces further scrutiny over his Premier League record.
