The Delhi High Court said that Mandhira Kapur, sister of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, is not a party to the ongoing legal battle over her brother’s estate. The clarification came after the court struck her name from its official proceedings, acknowledging that she had been erroneously recorded as appearing in the matter. The order followed a complaint filed by Sunjay Kapur’s widow, Priya Kapur, who alleged that Mandhira Kapur had attempted a “backdoor entry" into the case and should not be allowed to interfere.
Error In Court Records
In its September 10 order, the court had mistakenly noted the appearance of counsels on behalf of Mandhira Kapur. Priya Kapur’s application pointed out that the inclusion of her sister-in-law’s name was “factually incorrect," as she had never been impleaded in the case.
“Upon the careful perusal of the Case History of the captioned suit…it is apparent and clear that Ms. Mandhira Kapur has not filed any application to be impleaded as a party," Priya Kapur wrote in her complaint, calling the move a “mischievous attempt to mislead" the court. She further described it as “an abuse of process of law" and a bid to create an “incorrect record."
After reviewing the submissions, the court acknowledged the error and directed that its records be rectified.
Sunjay Kapur Family Dispute
The estate case remains a high-stakes battle, involving claims over assets estimated at ₹30,000 crore. Sunjay Kapur, who died suddenly, left behind children from his previous marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor, as well as his widow, Priya Kapur.
His children have challenged the validity of a will presented by Priya Kapur, calling it “forged and fabricated" and alleging that it unfairly excludes them. They argue that their father had promised to secure their financial future and named them as beneficiaries in his family trust.
Priya Kapur, however, defended the will as genuine as she told the court that the children had already received ₹1,900 crore from the family trust shortly before filing their suit. Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, has also joined the proceedings, claiming she has been left with nothing and accusing Priya Kapur of selling off her late son’s assets. The Delhi High Court has directed Priya Kapur to provide a full disclosure of her husband’s assets.
