The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday initiated action against Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy over remarks he made referring to conjoined twins during a political speech.

The commission wrote to the chief minister, conveying its displeasure and warning him over his statements.

In its letter, the NCW said it hoped that public discourse would, going forward, “continue to promote respect, compassion and encouragement for all women".

The NCW’s action followed a complaint filed by BJP Lok Sabha MP Dharmapuri Arvind, who also approached the National Human Rights Commission. The BJP demanded strict action, alleging that the remarks violated principles of dignity, equality and human rights.

The controversy erupted last week after Revanth Reddy, while campaigning for municipal elections, compared the BJP and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to conjoined twins. Addressing a public meeting in Karimnagar, he said, “Are these two parties not bound together like a Fevicol bond or the Veena–Vani bond? Though their bodies might be separate, their heads are joined together."

Veena and Vani are 22-year-old craniopagus conjoined twins from Telangana’s Mahabubabad district.

Condemning the remarks, Arvind had said the chief minister had made “insensitive, inhuman and irresponsible" statements while trying to suggest that the BJP and BRS were politically aligned.

Speaking to the media, he said such comments reflected a lack of sensitivity and were unbecoming of a constitutional authority.

“He was trying to prove that the BJP and the BRS are aligned together… But going ahead, he said it is like Veena-Vani bond, who are conjoined twins… His remarks were insesitive, inhuman, and irresponsible… Didn’t Harvard teach him sensitivity? He makes such random statements. He is illiterate," the BJP leader stated.
