The protests are taking place against the backdrop of Israel’s parliament bringing in tougher penalties for Palestinians accused of carrying out deadly attacks.

People in Damascus, the capital of Syria, protested against the law passed by Israel for the execution of Palestinian prisoners.

Protests broke out outside the United Arab Emirates embassy in Damascus on Friday, as demonstrators gathered and chanted slogans, with some calling the site a “Zionist embassy."

According to a report by Reuters, the situation escalated when a group split from a larger pro-Palestinian protest at Umayyad Square and attempted to move towards the embassy. A Syrian security official said forces intervened to stop them.

“Internal security forces prevented them from doing so and dealt with the situation," the official said, speaking anonymously.

Following the incident, the United Arab Emirates on Saturday condemned the unrest and called on Syrian authorities to ensure the safety of its diplomatic staff and premises. It also urged officials to investigate the matter and take action against those responsible.

Syria’s foreign ministry did not directly comment on the embassy incident but later said it maintains a “firm and unwavering stance" against any attacks on embassies or diplomatic missions.

The protests come amid wider demonstrations across Syria after Israel’s parliament introduced stricter penalties for Palestinians involved in deadly attacks.

The UAE normalised relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords in 2020, though ties have faced strain in recent years due to ongoing tensions in the region.
