Security agencies in Punjab and the national capital have been placed on high alert following a chilling death threat issued via email against Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu. The electronic communication, which reportedly originated from a masked server, contained specific threats to the lives of both high-profile leaders, prompting an immediate escalation in their security protocols.
Investigating the Digital Trail
Initial investigations by the Punjab Police Cyber Cell and central intelligence agencies suggest that the email was sent to several official government accounts. The message, written in a mix of English and Punjabi, warned of “dire consequences" for the leaders, specifically referencing their recent political stances on regional security and internal policy. Technical experts are currently working to trace the IP address used to send the threat, though sources indicate that the perpetrators likely utilised a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to obscure their physical location.
Strengthening Protection and Surveillance
In response to the development, the security detail for Chief Minister Mann, who already receives Z-plus category protection, has been bolstered and enhanced electronic surveillance around his official residence and convoy. Union Minister Ravneet Bittu, a vocal critic of radical elements, has also seen a recalibration of his security arrangements in Delhi and Punjab. Bittu, whose family has historically been a target of militancy—his grandfather, former Chief Minister Beant Singh, was assassinated in 1995—has often been the recipient of such threats.
Context of Rising Security Concerns
This incident occurs amid a period of heightened sensitivity in the border state, where authorities are battling a resurgence of cross-border smuggling and radical rhetoric. Both Mann and Bittu have been prominent faces in the state’s efforts to maintain law and order, making them frequent targets for non-state actors operating from abroad. Following back-to-back twin explosions near security establishments on Tuesday night, Mann on Wednesday had held the BJP responsible for the two blast incidents, alleging this was how the party was preparing for the upcoming assembly elections in the state. BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh on Thursday served a legal notice of defamation to Mann for his remarks.
While investigators have not yet officially linked the email to a specific group, the “modus operandi" matches previous threats issued by pro-Khalistani elements based in North America and Europe. Security forces have urged the public to remain vigilant as they continue to neutralise these evolving digital and physical threats.
