Punjab’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana has recorded 5,840 cashless treatment claims worth ₹1.31 crore for acute febrile illness over the last four months, making it the largest category under the state-run health scheme amid a rise in seasonal illnesses.

Data released by the State Health Agency (SHA) showed that fever-related illnesses, respiratory infections and stomach disorders have seen a rise across the state as Punjab enters the humid summer season. Acute febrile illness, a broad medical condition marked by sudden onset of fever caused by viral, bacterial or parasitic infections, emerged as one of the highest-utilised categories under the Bhagwant Mann government’s cashless healthcare scheme.

Apart from acute febrile illness, enteric fever accounted for 1,396 claims worth ₹30.47 lakh under the scheme. Pneumonia recorded 377 cases with claims amounting to ₹11.06 lakh, while acute bronchitis saw 326 claims worth over ₹9.24 lakh.

Diseases that typically trigger concern during monsoon months remained comparatively limited in the latest dataset. Dengue fever accounted for 12 cases with claims worth ₹40,880, while malaria recorded three cases and chikungunya six. Heat stroke was reported in four cases.

Doctors said the current trend reflects the seasonal rise in illnesses seen across hospitals every year.

Dr Vikas Goyal, Medical Superintendent at Civil Hospital, Patiala, said extreme heat and humidity often lead to fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, respiratory infections and skin allergies, particularly when people delay medical consultation. He said the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana has helped patients access indoor treatment without worrying about upfront medical expenses.

“It ensures that people can receive timely medical consultation and care without worrying about arranging money in advance," he said, adding that early diagnosis and treatment under the scheme could help prevent complications.

Public health experts also cautioned that seasonal outbreaks can change rapidly depending on rainfall patterns, mosquito breeding and sanitation conditions.

Dr Shashi Kant Dhir, Professor and Head of Pediatrics at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, said infants and young children remain especially vulnerable during periods of extreme heat and humidity. He said symptoms such as repeated vomiting, dehydration, seizures, breathing difficulty and persistent fever should not be ignored.
