PV Sindhu Joins BWF Council, Takes On Global Governance Role

P. V. Sindhu has assumed a full voting position on the Council of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) following her election as Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission.

PV Sindhu has stepped into a new role off the court, officially joining the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Council as a voting member after completing the formal vetting process.

Her appointment was formalised at the end of 2025, with Sindhu making her first appearance before the global badminton community at the BWF Annual General Meeting in Horsens.

A Seat At The Decision-Making Table

The BWF Council is responsible for shaping the strategic direction and governance of badminton worldwide. As a voting member, Sindhu will now be directly involved in key decisions that influence the future of the sport.

Her inclusion is particularly notable given that it remains rare for an active player competing at the highest level to simultaneously hold a governance role of this significance.

From Champion To Voice Of Athletes

Over the past decade, Sindhu has built a reputation not only as one of badminton’s most accomplished players but also as a respected global ambassador for the sport.

Her elevation to the Council reflects the trust placed in her leadership and understanding of the game.

“It is a true honour and privilege to take on this responsibility within the Badminton World Federation and to represent the voices of athletes from around the world," Sindhu said.

“Badminton has given me so much, and I feel deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the sport in this capacity.

“I am especially grateful to BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul for her warmth and encouragement, and I look forward to working closely with the Council and the wider BWF community as we continue to strengthen and grow this wonderful sport across the world."

BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul welcomed Sindhu’s appointment, highlighting the importance of athlete representation in governance.
