PV Sindhu suffered her second consecutive defeat to world No. 1 An Se Young in as many weeks, bowing out of the Indonesia Open on Thursday.
Sindhu, who was also beaten by the South Korean in the quarterfinals of last week’s Singapore Open, showed flashes of brilliance but lacked consistency as she went down 17-21, 14-21 in the round-of-16 clash.
The loss extended wo-time Olympic medallist Sindhu’s winless run against the reigning Olympic champion to 10 matches.
The Indian is yet to register a victory over An.
The match began on an even note, with the scores level at 10-10 midway through the opening game. Sindhu displayed glimpses of her best form and managed to put An under pressure at several stages.
She briefly took the lead at 15-14 with some aggressive strokeplay, but An responded in trademark fashion, reeling off a string of points to surge ahead 19-16.
The Korean then claimed two straight points, including a gruelling 41-shot rally, to wrap up the opening game.
Carrying that momentum into the second game, An moved fluently around the court and raced to a 13-6 advantage.
Despite trailing, Sindhu continued to battle for every point and managed to reduce the deficit on a few occasions.
However, An’s consistency and exceptional court coverage proved decisive as she closed out the match to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
