A Rafale fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) roared in the sky after taking off from the newly developed Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on the Moran Bypass during a 40-minute air show in Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by other dignitaries, attended the air show. The Rs 100-crore project is the first such facility in the northeastern India.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi himself landed at the 4.2-kilometre reinforced highway strip aboard a C-130J aircraft after departing from Chabua airfield, marking a significant milestone in the region’s defence infrastructure.

Built along National Highway-37 on the Moran Bypass, the ELF has been designed in coordination with the Air Force to support emergency landings and take-offs of both military and select civil aircraft.

Air Show Displays IAF’s Prowess

Following his arrival, PM Modi witnessed the air show, which also featured Tejas and Sukhoi fighter jets, along with helicopters, showcasing the operational flexibility of the armed forces. The exercise demonstrated the capability to convert highway stretches into functional runways in situations where airbases may be unavailable.

The dual-use facility can handle fighter aircraft weighing up to 40 tonnes and transport planes with a maximum take-off weight of 74 tonnes. Apart from strategic applications, the ELF is expected to play a key role in disaster response, enabling swift deployment of relief and rescue operations in the Northeast.

The event underlined the Centre’s focus on strengthening critical infrastructure in border regions. The successful operations from the Moran strip highlighted India’s preparedness and the Air Force’s ability to operate seamlessly from unconventional runways when required.
