Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh after the death of a Dalit girl, claiming that the victim was raped and brutally murdered, while her family was prevented from filing a complaint.

A teenage girl’s body was found in the Karanda area of Ghazipur district on April 15, with her family alleging sexual assault and murder. While the police said they are investigating the case, relatives and locals have been demanding speedy justice. Investigation into the case has indicated a possible suicide angle.

“A daughter of the Vishwakarma community has been raped and brutally murdered in Ghazipur, and the family has been threatened to prevent them from filing an FIR," Gandhi said on X. “Hathras, Kathua, Unnao, and now Ghazipur—this is a pattern. The daughter from Manipur breathed her last while waiting for justice."

Gandhi highlighted that it was yet another case where the victim was from a backward community seeking protection, while those in power remained silent.

“In a country and state where parents have to beg even to get an FIR filed for their daughter, that country’s government has no moral right to remain in power," he said in his post, seeking a high-level investigation in the case and protection for the family.

Posing questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, he asked, “Modi ji, Chief Minister ji, give a response — why are daughters so unsafe in your rule? In such circumstances, justice isn’t begged for — it is snatched. And we will snatch it."

Ghazipur Police Fact Checks Gandhi

In response to Gandhi’s criticism, Ghazipur Police called it a suicide case and told the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha to be aware of the correct facts.

“On the morning of April 15, 2026, at 5:44 am, the victim’s father called Dial 112 and reported that the girl had jumped off a bridge and committed suicide. In the FIR registered based on the written complaint of the victim’s father in this case, there is no mention of rape," it said on X.

Police further said the postmortem of the victim did not reveal any facts related to rape. “Please do not spread any such unverified, factually incorrect, and misleading rumours that disrupt peace in society. Ghazipur Police has already arrested one accused of murder and 10 accused of stone pelting in this case, and further arrests are ongoing," it said.

Meanwhile, Varanasi Additional Director General of Police Piyush Mordia visited the girl’s village on Friday, saying she had gone missing on the night of April 14 and her body was found in the Ganga river the next morning, about 3 km away in the Karanda police station area.

“Based on the information given by the family, an FIR was registered and the main accused has been arrested. Further investigation is underway," Mordia said. He added that the family expressed satisfaction with the police action and requested a fast-track trial.

On April 22, a Samajwadi Party delegation visiting the victim’s family came under stone-pelting in the village, leaving several people, including police personnel, injured. Police have arrested 10 people in connection with the attack.
