IMD forecasts gradual relief from north India heatwave May 28-30, with thunderstorms, gusty winds and light rain in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

After days of scorching temperatures across large parts of north India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast gradual relief from the ongoing heatwave between May 28 and May 30, with thunderstorms, gusty winds and light rainfall expected in several regions.

According to the IMD, weather conditions are likely to change due to the approach of a western disturbance and moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea, which could bring down temperatures across parts of northwest and central India.

The weather department said areas including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are expected to witness thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds over the coming days.

The national capital, which has been reeling under intense heatwave conditions, may also see some respite. Delhi recorded exceptionally high temperatures this week, with several areas crossing the 45-degree Celsius mark, while warm night conditions added to public discomfort.

The IMD has warned that thunderstorms accompanied by winds reaching 40-60 kmph may occur in parts of north India, potentially causing temporary disruptions but also helping lower daytime temperatures.

While the heatwave is expected to weaken gradually between May 28 and 30, weather officials cautioned that isolated pockets may still continue to experience above-normal temperatures during the period.

The department also advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid open spaces during lightning activity and strong winds.

Several northern states have witnessed severe heatwave conditions in recent days, with authorities issuing advisories urging people to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

The changing weather pattern is expected to bring much-needed relief after an extended spell of extreme temperatures across the region.
