Rain brings little relief as temperature drops by 2°C

Kanpur: Moderate rainfall on Sunday evening brought some relief from the prevailing heat, with the city’s maximum temperature dropping by around 2°C on Monday. The maximum temperature was recorded at 36°C, while the minimum settled at 25.8°C.According to the CSA weather observatory, Kanpur received around 9 mm of rainfall on Sunday evening.Despite the drop in temperature, humid conditions continued to trouble residents throughout the day. Maximum relative humidity was recorded at 84 per cent, resulting in excessive sweating and discomfort. North-easterly winds blowing at an average speed of 5.3 kmph provided little respite.Although the mercury remained around 36°C, bright sunshine and partly cloudy skies made conditions feel much hotter, with the heat index ranging between 39°C and 42°C.

High humidity, intermittent cloud cover and occasional light showers further added to the discomfort.According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), partly cloudy skies are expected across the Kanpur division over the next 24 hours, with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers accompanied by thunderstorms. The IMD forecast said Kanpur is likely to witness partly cloudy skies with chances of thunderstorms and light rainfall accompanied by strong winds during the afternoon or evening.

The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 36°C and 37°C, while the minimum may range between 26°C and 32°C.CSA weather expert Dr SN Sunil Pandey said atmospheric moisture and increased moisture flow are likely to keep the Kanpur division under cloudy skies and strong winds between July 6 and July 9. He said isolated light rain or drizzle accompanied by gusty winds, thunderclouds and lightning may occur in some areas, but cautioned that heat and humidity levels would rise whenever bright sunshine returns.
