A sudden downpour lashed many parts of Vellore and neighbouring big towns like Ambur, Vaniyambadi, Arani, Gudiyatham, Chengam, Polur and Jolarpet on Saturday.
Rain, which lasted for nearly an hour in major towns covering Vellore, Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai districts, has brought much-needed relief from soaring temperatures for residents. Frequent power cuts were reported in many areas of these districts due to strong winds.
Tiruvannamalai district received the highest downpour since Thursday night with a total rainfall of 19.20 mm, followed by Tirupattur with 13.10 mm.
Regular traffic movement, including two-wheelers and cars, was restored in Tiruvannamalai town as the Pournami day festival ended. Officials said that around 5-6 lakh devotees visited the town, mainly the Arunachaleswara temple and the 14-km Girivalam path. District police installed Face Recognition Cameras in the temple to alert the control room of persons with previous crime records.
