Randy West recalls ‘The Price Is Right’ fame Rod Roddy's struggle with bankruptcy and alcoholism

Fellow announcer Randy West revealed Rod Roddy's hidden battles with alcoholism and bankruptcy during his 'The Price Is Right' tenure. Despite his on-screen charisma, Roddy faced financial ruin and a struggle to stay sober. West shared how Roddy eventually overcame these hardships, learning valuable lessons and even maintaining his humor after a cancer diagnosis before his passing.

Rod Roddy was a famed name from the popular TV show ‘The Price Is Right.’ While on the show, the announcer was known for his antics, his commentary, and his bold voice; however, behind the scenes, he was struggling with issues like alcoholism and bankruptcy.

In a recent appearance, fellow announcer Randy West opened up about what it was like to work with the star and how he managed to overcome all of his hardships.

Randy West recalls working with Rod Roddy

While appearing on ‘Nostalgia Tonight with Joe Sibilia’, Randy West recalled what it was like for him to work along with Rod Roddy, and what went on behind the scenes on set at ‘The Price Is Right.’ He talked about how Roddy had a sustainable job, but was living from paycheck to paycheck, and with the tensions of the industry, he had started drinking a lot.He further recalled, “Working in the radio business when he got in, in his 20s, was a very secure, underpaid position until you got into a reasonable market. So he was living hand to mouth at the beginning. He did very well in radio, but he was also drinking quite a bit, so that was a challenge to him.” He also shared that all of this had led to a few issues with the police.

Rod Roddy went bankrupt; however, he later redeemed himself

West also shared how Roddy had been struggling financially a lot, and at one point in his life, even filed for bankruptcy.

“He had gone through bankruptcy. He was not always the most careful with money, which later all of these things informed him in his quest to be the best person he could be,” he shared, adding that all of this became a huge lesson for him.He shared that it was one of the lowest points of his life, and Rod Roddy was terrified of falling off the wagon again. He stopped drinking and became very careful about how he spent his earnings. He fondly remembered the fellow announcer and shared how even after getting diagnosed with colon cancer in 2001, he could not stop making jokes about the matter. Rod Roddy passed away at the age of 66 on October 27, 2003.
