The Superintendent of Police of Ranipet, Ayman Jamal, flagged off high-powered Emergency Response Police Vehicles (ERPV) to attend to emergency complaints registered through police helpline (100) and to patrol highways and arterial roads in the district round the clock.
Police said the initiative would strengthen the existing 18 bike and five jeep patrol services that help prevent highway robberies and other crime within the newly carved district. “Unlike the existing patrol services, the emergency response vehicle team will focus mainly on calls that are registered through police helpline numbers to help victims in distress,” said Ms. Jamal. .
Police said on an average, each emergency response vehicle with two policemen on duty would cover a distance of around 100 kms in three shifts every day. Major towns like Arcot, Arakkonam, Wallajah, Ranipet and Sholingur would be covered under the initiative. The services would be extended to rural pockets in the district in the coming months.
At present, the district police patrol a distance of 250 kms every day. The Bengaluru Highway between Pilayar Kuppam and Poonumani Pattarai in Ranipet is the longest distance of 48 kms followed by the Madras - Kochi Road with 26 kms that comes under Ranipet police district limits.
