West Asia crisis: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said the union government is closely monitoring the supply of essential goods and energy amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia, and appealed to people not to panic and assured that concrete measures are being taken to avoid disruptions in supply chains.
His remarks came after he chaired a meeting of the Informal Empowered Group of Ministers (IGoM) constituted to monitor the situation in West Asia. The meeting was held to review the evolving situation in the region and discuss related matters.

He said that the meeting was held to review possible risks arising from the conflict, especially related to energy supply and the availability of essential commodities.
He claimed that the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking continuous steps to ensure there is no shortage of essential goods in the country.
“The government is continuously working to ensure that the supply of essential commodities remains stable and that there is no shortage of any kind," he said.
The Defence Minister further appealed to people not to panic and assured that concrete measures are being taken to avoid disruptions in supply chains.
He also said Prime Minister Modi’s call for public participation and responsible use of resources would help the country deal with global challenges and strengthen India’s energy security.
Earlier on Sunday, PM Modi in Hyderabad called on every Indian citizen to join a collective movement for economic resilience amid rising global tension.
Speaking against a backdrop of global supply chain disruptions and rising costs fueled by international conflicts, the Prime Minister framed the current crisis not just as a government challenge, but as a test of national character.
“Patriotism is not only about the willingness to sacrifice one’s life on the border," the Prime Minister remarked. “In these times, it is about living responsibly and fulfilling our duties to the nation in our daily lives."
The US-Iran conflict has led to a sharp rise in global petrol and diesel prices, increasing pressure on household expenses and the broader economy. Against this backdrop, he also said that reviving work-from-home, virtual meetings and online conferences could help cut unnecessary travel and reduce foreign exchange spending on costly fuel imports.
He also emphasised greater use of public transport such as metros, buses and trains, while also encouraging carpooling for private travel.
“During the Corona period, we adopted work from home, online meetings, video conferences, and developed many such systems. We had also become accustomed to them," he said.
“Today, the demands of the times are such that if we restart these systems, it will be in the national interest. We must prioritise work from home, online conferences, and virtual meetings again. We must also place a strong emphasis on saving foreign exchange, as petrol and diesel have become so expensive globally," he added.
PM Modi also called on people to avoid unnecessary foreign travel, overseas vacations and foreign weddings. “We must decide that during this time of crisis, we should postpone travelling abroad for at least a year," he said.
He also called on people to halt gold purchases to ease the burden on foreign exchange outflows. He requested people to avoid purchasing gold for at least a year “no matter how many functions we have scheduled at home."
