Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned a US-Israeli strike near the Bushehr nuclear power plant, the fourth in two weeks, and highlighted the Western outrage over the Russian bombing of the Zaporizhzhia power plant in Ukraine.

A person was killed after a projectile hit an area near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, which has come under repeated strikes, raising fears of an escalation in the ongoing war and civilian casualties. Officials said there has been no rise in radiation levels following the incident.

“Remember the Western outrage about hostilities near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine? Israel-US have bombed our Bushehr plant four times now. Radioactive fallout will end life in GCC capitals, not Tehran. Attacks on our petrochemicals also convey real objectives," Araghchi wrote on X.

The Iranian Foreign Minister was referring to the Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power facility that was seized by Russian forces in 2022. The repeated Russian bombing near the facility drew widespread condemnation from the United States and other European countries.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly warned of the risk of a catastrophic accident at Zaporizhzhia, which is located near the front line in the war in Ukraine. The plant’s two external lines have gone down on a number of occasions and both were out for nearly a month at one point last year, obliging the plant to rely on diesel generators.

US-Israeli Strikes On Bushehr

The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran said the person who was killed in the US-Israeli strike on Bushehr nuclear power plant was part of the plant’s security staff, and that damage was done to one of the facility’s side buildings.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi expressed deep concern over the reported strike. He stressed that nuclear power plants and their surrounding areas must never be targeted under any circumstances.

The latest incident adds to growing international unease over repeated strikes near sensitive nuclear infrastructure, as fears mount that continued escalation could trigger a wider environmental and humanitarian crisis.

Meanwhile, US-Israeli strikes have targeted a petrochemicals hub in south-western Iran, wounding five people, Iranian media cited an official as saying. The deputy governor for Khuzestan province, Valiollah Hayati, said the US-Israeli attack on Mahshahr hit three companies in the area.
