Todd Landry Charged With DUI After Car Hits Crowd At Louisiana Festival

A man has been charged after at least 15 people were injured, some critically, when a vehicle drove into a crowd at the Louisiana Lao New Year Festival in Iberia Parish on Saturday.

The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. local time at the corner of Savannaket Street and Melancon Road, according to reports.

Who Is Todd Landry?

Todd Landry, 57, from Jeanerette, Louisiana, faces several charges. These include driving while impaired, 18 counts of first-degree negligent injuring, careless operation, and having an open container.

State police said Landry showed signs of impairment. A breath test recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.137 per cent, nearly twice the legal limit.

Investigation underway

Authorities said the crash does not appear to have been deliberate. Rebecca Melancon, a public information officer for the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Department, said the early investigation suggests it was not an intentional act.

Landry has been taken into custody and booked into the Iberia Parish jail. The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.

Emergency response and injuries

Emergency teams rushed to the scene after the incident. Acadian Ambulance sent ten ambulances and two helicopters.

Eleven injured people were taken to hospital by road, while two were airlifted. At least four victims were reported to be in critical condition. All injured were taken to hospitals in Lafayette for treatment.

What festival organisers said?

The Louisiana Lao New Year Festival is a three-day event celebrating Lao culture with food, music, dance, religious blessings, and water activities.

In a statement on Facebook, organisers said they were deeply saddened and were waiting for more information from authorities. They added that all security resources had been redirected to the scene.

For safety reasons, all music programmes were cancelled for the night, with no live concerts or alcohol sales. Vendors were allowed to stay open until 9:00 PM.

Organisers said they were praying for the victims and their families. They added that if security is restored, only religious services and vendor operations may resume on Sunday.
