RMC meeting on flooding gets hit by leaks from above

RAIPUR: Following the weekend’s severe deluge that exposed administrative and political lapses and left upscale areas heavily flooded, the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) convened a special general meeting on Monday.

However, the session meant to address the citywide civic infrastructure crisis was marked by glaring irony: rainwater steadily dripped from the ceiling of the fourth-floor General Assembly Hall, right in front of chairperson Suryakant Rathore’s dais.Addressing the administrative blind spots that led to choked drains and submerged transit routes, Mayor Meenal Choubey sharply reprimanded civic officials.

She warned the municipal commissioner and the bureaucracy not to underestimate the grassroots struggles of elected councilors, who currently face intense public anger over the city’s crumbled sanitation system.“Good governance is not achieved merely by shuffling paperwork or holding closed-door meetings,” Choubey asserted. She demanded that officials respect the dignity of councilors and actively log their structural interventions to improve the situation within limited resources.

The meeting’s core agenda directly mirrored the systemic flaws witnessed yesterday, focusing heavily on unauthorized construction and illegal plotting that choked Raipur’s natural drainage networks.As flower pots were hastily placed to cordon off leaking puddles inside the councilors’ seating area, Chairman Rathore urged the house to move beyond simply listing grievances. Acknowledging that the city’s disastrous weekend condition was evident to all, Rathore pressed the council to provide constructive, long-term suggestions to clear the administrative paralysis and fix the broken civic machinery.
