Ahmedabad: A local court on Thursday remanded Mayur Mali, a co-accused in the Rs 1.66 crore jewellery theft case, to police custody till May 25 after his arrest by Nikol police.Mali is accused of conspiring to steal from a city jewellery showroom with the help of his associate Harshida Shetty, who worked there as a sales staffer.
On May 11, she allegedly fled with 1.211kg of gold jewellery worth Rs 1.66 crore.Following her arrest, Shetty allegedly disclosed that the theft was planned with Mali’s assistance, and that they travelled on his bike to Udaipur, Jaipur and Delhi. She claimed that Mali took away a major share of the stolen jewellery.Seeking five-day custody, the investigating officer told the court that jewellery worth Rs 16.7 lakh had been recovered from Mali and his custodial interrogation was needed to trace the remaining stolen items, as nearly 800 grams of jewellery is yet to be recovered.Citing Mali’s lack of cooperation, the officer stated in the remand report that he was not disclosing where he had sold some of the items. Shetty had revealed that Mali sold a bracelet at a GIFT City shop and another item in Delhi, but he has not revealed the buyers’ identities.Police also informed the court that a cheating complaint is registered against Mali at Madhavpura police station, and his interrogation is necessary to ascertain involvement in other offences.
