Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday declared a 32-hour ceasefire in Ukraine over the Orthodox Easter weekend, the Kremlin said.
Putin’s decree, released by the Kremlin, orders Russian forces to observe a ceasefire starting on 4 p.m. Saturday and lasting until the end of Sunday.
“By the decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief…V.V. Putin, in connection with the approaching Orthodox feast of Easter (the Resurrection of Christ), a ceasefire is declared from 16:00 (13:00 GMT) on 11 April until the end of the day on 12 April 2026," the Kremlin’s statement said.
“We proceed on the basis that the Ukrainian side will follow the example of the Russian Federation."
Easter, a major holiday for Christians, is celebrated on Sunday. Easter falls on April 12 according to the Julian calendar followed by Orthodox churches in Ukraine and Russia.
Putin’s move came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed earlier this week to observe a pause in attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure over the Orthodox Easter. He said that he made the offer through the United States, which has been mediating talks between delegations from Moscow and Kyiv as the conflict stretches into a fifth year.
In 2022, during the early months of the war, Russia and Ukraine announced brief ceasefires to allow for the evacuation of civilians from besieged areas like Mariupol and to deliver humanitarian aid. However, these ceasefires were limited in scope and often broken by both sides.
