Samastha calls for bifurcation of Malappuram, urges scientific review of boundaries of districts

The Samastha centenary conference has called for the bifurcation of Malappuram district and the formation of new districts in Kerala, citing rising population and growing administrative challenges that make a reorganisation of the district boundaries inevitable.

In a resolution, the conference pointed out that districts like Malappuram, with a population exceeding 45 lakh, face serious difficulties in efficient administration and equitable distribution of resources. It said the creation of new districts is essential to ensure smoother governance and better public service delivery. Similar challenges, arising from geographical features and travel difficulties, were noted in districts such Idukki, Ernakulam and Palakkad.

‘Emulate T.N.’

The conference suggested that Kerala could look to Tamil Nadu as a model noting that the neighbouring State has 38 districts within the limits of 39 Parliamentary constituencies, indicating a more decentralised administrative structure.

According to the resolution, the formation of new districts would bring civil stations, hospital and other basic infrastructure closer to people, while also accelerating economic growth in backward regions. Samastha urged both the ruling and Opposition parties to rise above political interests and jointly work towards redrawing district boundaries based on scientific studies, the conference declared.
