Cam McCormick’s college football career was marred by injuries and diseases, from ACL tear, knee injury, knee surgery, rhabdomyolysis, a torn deltoid ligament, a broken left fibula, screw placed in the ankle, stress fracture, tendinitis, and tibial tendon rupture to a torn Achilles tendon.

His personal life, too, was muddled with problems. In October 2022, The Oregonian reported, “McCormick is estranged from his biological father, Corey. Their relationship was close when Cam was a child, but they drifted apart when he and his mother, Debra, moved from Arizona to Pennslyvania and back when he was growing up. After they moved to Bend in 2012, his father visited a couple of times, but they have not spoken since McCormick arrived at Oregon in spring 2016.”

New England Patriots’ newest scouting assistant Cam McCormick has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in advertising and brand responsibility

Despite so much burden in former Miami Hurricanes TE Cam McCormick’s personal and football life, he continued and completed his education by earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in advertising and brand responsibility. In 2022, Joe Morgan of FOX News reported that McCormick had already earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s, saying he would study yoga or business or pursue internships in order to satisfy the academic requirements.

The same year, he was announced as the winner of the Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award - for displaying courage on and off the field.

Cam McCormick is the only college football player with nine years of NCAA eligibility

MASS Live reported on June 16, 2025, that McCormick was the first player to be granted a ninth year of eligibility by the NCAA. He had used a normal redshirt season, an extra season for the COVID-19 pandemic, and three exemptions that gave him an extra year of eligibility due to medical hardship(his season-ending injuries and surgeries). McCormick accumulated 32 passes for 273 yards and 7 TDs in a total of 55 college games. In the last season at Miami Hurricanes, he had six catches for 42 yards and 3 TDs.

“There are many paths to the NFL”: After nine years in college football, Cam McCormick finally enters the NFL, not as a player, but as a scouting assistant

After all these struggles, Cam McCormick shared his excitement over Instagram with a four-worded caption - Same game, different role.

Ari Meirov, NFL Insider, posted on his X on June 15, 2025 - Former University of Miami TE Cam McCormick, who famously had nine years of college eligibility and went undrafted this year, has been hired by the #Patriots as a scouting assistant. X users responded with the following reactions:
