Trust Sanya Malhotra to always speak her mind. In a similar vein, the actor recently opened up about always being extremely comfortable with her body while recollecting an incident during the shoot of Dangal that left her shocked.

“I remember during Dangal, someone told me, ‘Get your jaw reconstructed’. I was like, ‘yeh kya hota hai, bhaiya?’ I was surprised how can someone tell you to get jaw reconstruction? I have always been very comfortable and happy with my body. Even when I came to Mumbai, I used to go to auditions without makeup. I had so much confidence. I was like, if they have to take me, they will. I had such confidence,” shared Malhotra on Hauterrfly.

However, she admitted to dealing with water retention like many women. “With us, with female bodies, we fluctuate. For some days, I have abs. And then I get my period. My abs go away. Then, my body looks different. I put on weight. I deal with a lot of water retention. I can’t sit and expect my body to look the same. That’s the beauty of being a woman. We are ever-evolving.

Despite being consistent with an exercise routine and a good diet, many women experience bloating due to water retention and hormonal changes due to different phases of the menstrual cycle, said clinical dietitian Garima Goyal.

The changes in weight during the menstrual cycle are due to fluctuations in the two female hormones – estrogen and progesterone.

Goyal explained that hormonal changes lead to water retention in the body, and fluctuations in these two hormones make the tissues in the body more susceptible to accumulating fluid, causing edema. “During PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) and menses, women usually tend to gain some weight due to bloating. The hormonal changes that trigger this gain in pounds disappear by the time you reach your mid-cycle, or you ovulate,” said Goyal.

According to her, bloating is common during periods. “Basic reason is the gas accumulation in the gut due to hormonal changes. The uterus releases certain chemicals called prostaglandins during periods, which leads to stomach cramps. These cramps can also cause a sensation of weight gain,” said Goyal.

If the weight changes seen during the menstrual cycle are significantly high, try consulting a healthcare provider, as you may have a serious hormonal imbalance.
