German software major SAP CEO Christian Klein outlined a new strategy for an AI-first world, calling it the “autonomous enterprise.” He stressed that while AI is transformative, it will not replace enterprise software.“We’re introducing our vision of the autonomous enterprise to redefine how businesses will run in the age of AI,” Klein said in an email to employees. “Our goal is to help customers operate smarter, respond faster, and free up capacity for higher-value work using AI assistants and agents that manage end-to-end processes across domains in a connected, real-time system.”At the core of this vision is the SAP Business AI Platform (BAIP), which integrates process knowledge, enterprise data, and governance into AI agents.

Klein said this builds on SAP’s ERP foundation, embedding business context into AI-driven decision-making.Positioning SAP against competitors, he said the company is building an integrated architecture for enterprise-wide autonomy, spanning areas such as finance, supply chain, human capital management, and customer experience. “These agents will go beyond task automation and act as intelligent co-workers—connecting processes, data, and decisions across the enterprise,” he said.

SAP’s strategy rests on four pillars: Joule as the new engagement layer bringing together data, workflows, and agents; the SAP autonomous suite to run AI-driven operations; industry-specific AI applications with built-in domain expertise; and the business AI platform as the foundation combining unified data, models, and governance.Klein also called for internal alignment to execute the shift. “Shift development focus from standalone apps to agents and a shared enterprise-grade AI context,” he said, urging teams to work closely with customers.“This isn’t SAP’s first platform shift. Our ability to adapt reflects our commitment to lead this transformation—as we did with the cloud,” he added. When TOI reached out to SAP, its spokesperson said the firm is “strongly positioned in the AI era” and continues to evolve to help customers navigate growing complexity.
