The Supreme Court Monday directed social media influencers, including Samay Raina, to display apology on their channels for ridiculing disabled persons in their content, news agency PTI reported.
Pulling up the comedians over their content, mocking disabled people, the apex court added that a penalty will also be imposed on social media influencers for doing the same.
Stating that the right of freedom of speech and expression cannot be applicable to commercial speech hurting sentiments of other community, the court asked the Centre to frame guidelines for social media to curb speeches offending or ridiculing disabled, women, children and senior citizens.
“Guidelines for social media regulations shouldn’t be knee jerk reaction but based on broad parameters having views of all stakeholders,” the SC said.
