American second seed Coco Gauff faced a surprising loss to Ukrainian world number 42 Dayana Yastremska at Wimbledon as she was defeated 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 on Tuesday.
Gauff was anticipated to have a strong performance at the All England Club after her win at Roland Garros last month.
Instead of capitalising on her Paris success, Gauff experienced her earliest major exit since her first-round defeat at Wimbledon two years back.
Yastremska bagged the win against Gauff in 78 minutes on Court 1, with the latter joining third seed Jessica Pegula and fifth seed Zheng Qinwen as notable exits from the tournament on Tuesday.
Gauff, a two-time major champion, hasn’t progressed beyond the fourth round in any of her six Wimbledon appearances.
Gauff’s loss to Yastremska was marked by an error-filled performance, including nine double faults, 29 unforced errors and just six winners.
Yastremska, who has mentioned an allergy to grass, achieved a brilliant win against Gauff, continuing her remarkable run on the surface.
Known for her high-profile Instagram modelling, Yastremska reached the Nottingham final and the Eastbourne quarters last month.
“It was a great match today. I was really on fire, even my nails had fire on them. Playing with Coco is special. These courts are made for the greatest players, so I’m very grateful to play here," Yastremska said after the match.
“It’s unexpected. I love playing on grass. I feel this year we are kind of friends. I hope the road can continue for me," Yastremska added.
