A senior Indian Revenue Service officer was arrested Saturday by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe, the agency said in a statement.

The officer, a 2007 batch official currently serving as Additional Director General at the Directorate of Taxpayer Services in Delhi, was taken into custody from his residence in the Vasant Kunj neighbourhood of the capital. He is accused of soliciting Rs 45 lakh from a complainant in return for favourable treatment from the Revenue and Income Tax Department.

The CBI, which registered a formal case on May 31, alleged that the bribe demand came with threats of legal action, punitive penalties, and continued harassment should the complainant fail to comply.

A trap was set to apprehend the individuals involved, the agency said. “CBI laid a trap and caught accused private person red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 25 lakh from the complainant on the behalf of accused public servant at the public servant’s residence in Mohali,” the spokesperson said. “Accused public servant was also apprehended from his residence in Vasant Kunj. Later, both accused were arrested and will be produced before the concerned Court.”
