Several people were injured in a shooting at the University of Iowa early on Sunday, triggering emergency alerts and a police investigation in the US college town, AFP reported.

Officials said the incident happened in an area known for nightlife. The university issued an alert after reports of gunfire, asking people to avoid the area and remain cautious.

Police were called to the spot shortly before 2:00 AM (US’ local time) following reports of a large fight. When officers reached the scene, they heard gunshots.

“The Iowa City Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday," city officials said, adding that no arrests have been made so far.

“Multiple victims have been taken to area hospitals to be treated for wounds suffered in the shooting," the statement added. The condition of the injured is not yet known.

The university confirmed there were victims but did not share further details.

The shooting took place near College and Clinton streets, a busy area popular among students.

In recent months, similar incidents have been reported on US campuses. Two people were killed in a shooting at South Carolina State University in February, while another shooting at Brown University in December left two dead and nine injured after a gunman opened fire inside a classroom.
