Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has come under scrutiny following serious allegations from its BPO unit in Nashik. Complaints claim that senior employees sexually harassed women staff and pressured some into religious conversion. The issue first came to light on March 25, when a 23-year-old employee filed an FIR accusing a colleague of rape on the false promise of marriage.

Here’s what happened so far:

As the investigation progressed, more complaints emerged, expanding the case to include sexual harassment, misconduct and attempts at forced conversion. Police say the matter may involve a pattern targeting vulnerable employees.

‘Mastermind’ Nida Khan on the run

Nida Khan, 44, has been identified as a key accused and is currently absconding. She has approached a Nashik court seeking anticipatory bail, with her plea scheduled to be heard on April 20 at 11.30 a.m. Khan, who is reportedly in Mumbai and expecting her first child, has cited her pregnancy as grounds for relief.

Police have described her as the “mastermind" behind the alleged conversion activities. However, her lawyer has denied all allegations, stating there is no evidence linking her to harassment or religious coercion. Her family has also disputed her designation, claiming she worked as a tele-caller, while company records describe her as a “process associate".

Multiple complaints and arrests

Police are now investigating nine FIRs linked to the case. Eight women employees have filed complaints covering incidents between 2022 and 2026. The allegations include sexual assault, stalking, lewd comments, body shaming and repeated harassment inside the workplace.

So far, eight employees have been arrested, including seven men and one woman manager. Another accused, believed to be Nida Khan, remains at large. In total, 62 arrests have been made in connection with violence, including individuals accused of arson and attacking police. Authorities say many of those arrested are not labourers and some came from outside the region.

Malaysia Links: What the investigation has found?

Investigators say victims were allegedly harassed both at work and through social media. Digital evidence, including call records, emails and chat exchanges, is being examined. Around 78 suspicious call records linked to the accused have been flagged.

Police also uncovered alleged use of WhatsApp groups to identify and target victims. Deleted chats are being recovered through forensic analysis. A possible international link has also emerged, with a suspected individual based in Malaysia appearing in recovered conversations.

Additionally, two social media accounts allegedly used to spread misinformation and incite workers were found to be operated from Pakistan using VPNs.

Role of HR and POSH concerns in TCS

One of the key aspects under investigation is whether workplace safeguards failed. Some victims have accused the HR department of ignoring complaints. One complainant alleged that concerns raised through emails were dismissed and not acted upon.

TCS response and internal probe

TCS has said it follows a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct. The company has suspended the accused employees and launched an internal investigation led by Chief Operating Officer Aarthi Subramanian.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran described the allegations as serious and said corrective measures would be taken. TCS CEO K Krithivasan stated that the company had not received complaints through its formal ethics or POSH channels and denied reports that the Nashik unit was being shut down. The company has asked employees to work from home during the probe.

Case in SC now

The case has now reached the Supreme Court through a plea seeking stricter action on organised religious conversion and harassment. Central agencies, including the National Commission for Women and the National Human Rights Commission, have stepped in, seeking detailed reports and reviewing workplace safety.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, and police are continuing to trace evidence and identify more victims. Authorities are also examining whether the case involves a broader organised network.

Similar case

Meanwhile, in a similar case, the head of a Nagpur-based NGO has been arrested on multiple charges, including alleged religious conversion, molestation and forcing women to wear Islamic attire. The accused, identified as Fazil Qazi, is alleged to have pressured women associated with the NGO, named Universal Multipurpose Society, to adopt Islamic practices, including wearing specific attire and following certain customs. It is learnt that the complainant is a woman employed at the organisation, who also holds the position of HR head. In her statement, she has accused Qazi of repeatedly forcing her to follow Islam against her will.
