Iran’s Ambassador to India, Dr Mohammad Fathali, expressed gratitude to the country for extending support and sympathy during what he described as a period of national crisis.

Fathali’s remarks were in reference to the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several of the country’s political and military bigwigs in the joint U.S.-Israeli strikes that began on February 28.

Addressing an event in New Delhi, the envoy said: “…During this severe period of crisis at a time when we are mourning the loss of not just one, but two of our leaders, the people of this entire country stood by us. They stood shoulder to shoulder with us, expressing their deep sympathy and offering their condolences", as quoted by news agency ANI.

Fathali acknowledged how the citizens of India extended their support and assistance to Iran “regardless of their religious affiliation".

“People came forward and shared in our sorrow. For this, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the people of India—to the citizens of this nation, regardless of their religious affiliation", he said.

West Asia Conflict

The remarks by Dr Mohammad Fathali come against the backdrop of a broader conflict in the West Asia that began on February 28 after the U.S. and Israel launched coordinated attacks on Iran, killing its Supreme Leader Khamenei.

Iran retaliated by launching attacks across the Gulf, targeting American facilities and infrastructure in the region. Subsequently, Tehran blocked the crucial Strait of Hormuz — which provides for nearly one-fifth of the global oil and gas trade — disrupting energy supplies worldwide with countries plunging into an economic chaos.

What’s The Status-Quo?

U.S. President Donald Trump remains optimistic that a breakthrough in negotiations in Iran can be expected “over the weekend", even as Tehran asserts there is no “tangible progress" in the talks.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump claimed Washington had “wiped out" Iran’s leadership. He said if Tehran killed American troops, it would be a “good reason" to start the war.

“If they killed US Troops, it would be a good reason to do so…There is no navy, no air force, we have wiped out their leadership. Then you read in the fake news that they are doing really well in the war, this is unbelievable. They have 159 ships and all of them lie at the bottom of the ocean. We have taken pictures of them down there", said the U.S. President.
